Event Description

One-Book Holyoke, a two-month long celebration of the power of the written word, will host a series of events celebrating Ernest J. Gaines’s "A Lesson Before Dying":

Wednesday, 10/14, 7-9pm, St. Paul's Church, 485 Appleton
The Big Read Kick-Off Gala
A big community-wide program to begin Holyoke's Big Read! The evening program includes: Keynote speaker, Derek Fenner, director of Unlocking the Light, an arts integration program with incarcerated youth; a teaser of a dramatic reading from the novel by Enchanted Circle Theater artists; music by the performance duo Higher Help, and a sampling of tastes of Cajun cuisine.

Book Jacket Design Contest
All One Book Holyoke readers are invited to submit their design to Holyoke High School art teacher Mr. William Greaney for a new book jacket for "A Lesson Before Dying."
Two winners: 18 and under, 18 and over; Each winner receives $100.00.

Dramatic Reading: "A Lesson Before Dying"
Enchanted Circle Theater brings the story and characters from A Lesson Before Dying to life through a dramatic reading of excerpts from the book.

Art Exhibition
Unlocking the Light: Integrating the Arts in Juvenile Justice Education: An exhibit of 12 paintings and prints created by youth in residential facilities of the Department of Youth Services in Massachusetts, in a program with Hampshire Educational Collaborative.

Wednesday, 11/18, 6-8pm, St. Paul's Church
Celebrate the Successful Conclusion of One Book Holyoke!
Community leaders will read from their personal lessons before dying.
We'll announce the winners of the high school's "Design a Book Jacket" contest, and the essay contest. The community is invited to an ice cream social at the end of the evening to honor Jefferson's last meal request.
