Holyoke School Committee review of Holyoke’s Elementary Art & Music Programs

The Holyoke School Committee review of Holyoke’s elementary art & music programs, previously scheduled on 5/28, has been re-scheduled to

Tuesday, June 16 at 6:15 pm, at Dean Tech’s Fifield Room.

I already know that the current state of instruction in all of our elementary schools in these areas is inadequate-not because the teachers are at fault, but because asking a single teacher to plan and instruct general music and art across all k-8 grades, with a student load of anywhere from 400-625 students is an unreasonable task. The excellent performing arts programs at Holyoke High School will soon suffer if this situation at the elementary level is not corrected. The purpose of this meeting is to note the current situation for the record, and make it as clear as possible to the entire School Committee, the Mayor, and the HPS administation that this problem must be addressed.

I will add copies of the e-mails and letters I have received to the record. More are welcome, and I invite you to attend the meeting on Tuesday.
